What are Neurotoxins?
While neurotoxins can be dangerous outside of a treatment setting, they have been safely and effectively used in the cosmetic industry for several years. There are two main types of neurotoxins used in the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines – BOTOX® Cosmetic and XEOMIN®.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most popular form of neurotoxin injectable treatment on the market today. Made from the botulinum toxin, BOTOX® Cosmetic is currently the only FDA-approved treatment to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe lines between the brows and crow’s feet in the eye areas.
XEOMIN® is also derived from the botulinum toxin, but is designed differently. The therapeutic components of XEOMIN® are isolated, while the rest of the molecule is stripped away, resulting in a highly concentrated neurotoxin. XEOMIN® is used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.
How Do Neurotoxins Work?
When injected with an ultrafine needle directly into the muscle of treated areas, neurotoxins temporarily halt the muscle activity that causes the skin to wrinkle. By relaxing the facial muscles, neurotoxins smooth out wrinkles for several months. The effects of the injections will wear off over time and wrinkles will reappear, but when used as a regular treatment, neurotoxins can effectively manage wrinkles and lines over the long term.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Both BOTOX® and XEOMIN® have proven histories of safe use, but minor side effects can occur such as swelling, bleeding, bruising and itchiness at the injection site. You will be advised to prevent rubbing or massaging the treated area, as this can cause the neurotoxin to move elsewhere in the face and result in facial weakness or drooping.
An allergy test will be performed during your consultation, and your medical history, goals, and expectations will be discussed to determine if neurotoxins are right for you.
